I have been lived here since 2006 and people are generally very friendly and no one will bother you if your a western visitor "Unless your unruly and going against their islamic law!" The men will greet and welcome you in their shops and generally try to help if they can speak your language. That is very often a problem. Most people here are not throughly educated about other languages and cultures.

Racism is a huge problem in this country. It happens on all levels here and is accustomed to by the visitors here. Even locals act the same to their own residents if they are from another tribe. I have seen one instance where a group of couples were having dinner in a nice restaruant. "Matawa", their religious enforcers, saw an asian couple sitting among a group of westerners. They immediately inquired about their marriage. The couple had to show papers indicating that they were indeed married or they would have been sent to jail for "association". It's illegal for a man to associate with a woman unless they are married or related. What was ironic, is that the other four western couples were not married at all and not bothered at all.
