Can you believe this place once used to be full of sea life? This is one of the recent places I visited here while on my journey in Saudi. You can see why they call it "The Edge of the World." The dropoff is a spectacular view for a few kilometers. Driving there was completely offroad for about 5 kiliometers and there was actually streams to be crossed. Imagine that... Streams in the Desert! Most people have a degraded view of Saudi Arabia and believe it to be a
WAR ZONE
and full of terrorist. Thats the whole "controlled" views given to you by
our lovely press. From being in Qatar, I got a glimpse of what the Arab lifestyle was, and now that I am working directly in the Capital of Saudi, My eyes have
opened.
I have been lived here since 2006 and people are generally very friendly and no one will bother you if your a western visitor "Unless your unruly and going against their islamic law!" The men will greet and welcome you in their shops and generally try to help if they can speak your language. That is very often a problem. Most people here are not throughly educated about other languages and cultures. Racism is a huge problem in this country. It happens on all levels here and is accustomed to by the visitors here. Even locals act the same to their own residents if they are from another tribe. I have seen one instance where a group of couples were having dinner in a nice restaruant. "Matawa", their religious enforcers, saw an asian couple sitting among a group of westerners. They immediately inquired about their marriage. The couple had to show papers indicating that they were indeed married or they would have been sent to jail for "association". It's illegal for a man to associate with a woman unless they are married or related. What was ironic, is that the other four western couples were not married at all and not bothered at all. |
The only real threat today is the day to day drivers. They are just unruley and obnocious. You will find them turning left from right hand lanes, stoppping all traffic. They pass signal lights and wait for someone to honk at them signaling when it is time to carry on. Sometimes you can be traveling along at the posted limit, and have someone behind you flashing his lights at you to get you to move out of his way, knowing that you are right behind another driver. You can ocassionally find one or two who will race along the left side of the road even when you are passing another vehicle. Well, here we surely can't blame women drivers. :P Take a look at these articles :
70 Car Pileup I was at this one, and didn't see a bit of fog!!! I just wasnt driving 140Kph on the shoulder!!! Crazy Saudi Driving ! Imagine if they were drunk! Women's Rights You think you got it rough! |
